For I was lonely and you visited me…
The Elder Services program at Good News Outreach serves senior citizens who live at home as well as those who reside in area nursing homes. Our services include spiritual companionship, checking in via phone calls, material goods such as food, and help with practical needs such as transportation to doctors’ appointments or grocery stores. Kindness, personified by our tireless volunteers, taps on the front doors of our elders and delivers a sense of friendship and hope through regular visits. If a personal visit is not practical or necessary, volunteers are just a phone call away, as they touch base through the phone pal program. Each month, Good News Outreach volunteers receive the joy of assisting approximately 150 of our elder Tallahassee area brothers and sisters who might otherwise live in isolation.
Although each senior client is unique, they do often share typical concerns. Many struggle financially; many have few or no friends or family who remain involved in their daily lives; and many languish on waiting lists for other social service programs. The hug, handshake, or phone call to say hello, along with an attentive ear, and compassionate smile offered by devoted volunteers goes a long way toward addressing the most pressing need that many have: social interaction and friendship.
In turn, Good News Outreach volunteers develop friendships, create memories, and enjoy the benefits of living a life that includes service to others. Taking a moment to assist with small tasks or chores while chatting about grandchildren or current events can make a world of difference to a senior who struggles with the challenges of aging in our society.
